The only lilac on the island is called Ehrensvärd’s lilac. It is known that Ehrensvärd brought with him plants from abroad to Suomenlinna, among them lilacs from France. Therefore is has been thought that he would have planted a lilac also here at Svartholma. It is said that when soldiers went on leave back home, they would have taken with them small saplings from the lilac, and that the lilac would have thus spread around Finland.
